Discover Homebrewing

By Steve Pavilanis

Ever had a meal at a brewpub?? Brew pubs are those great restaurant/bars that often have huge brewing tanks on display through glass where you can actually watch the professional brewers hard at work producing great beer. Or perhaps you've gone on a brewery tour and seen all of the huge crazy equipment, or possibly you've actually tried someone's homebrewed beer and wondered how hard it might be to brew your own beer at home?

Becoming a homebrewer is actually much simpler than you probably think. You don't need those gigantic and costly tanks, or a whole empty warehouse, or even an empty garage to work in. And there isn't any danger of blowing-up your house, believe it or not!

Homebrewing these days is a full-blown popular hobby. The homebrewing market is massive, with thousands of organizations producing goods and equipment solely for home brewers to use. Gone are the days of buying low-grade ingredients at the supermarket and trying to make crude beer from it. Homebrewers now have access to huge warehouses of materials at neighborhood home brew supply stores and of course at the countless online super stores.

More good news - you do not have to be a chemist, scientist, nerd or hippie to make great beer at home! If you can follow the instructions on the back of instant cookie mix, and know how to boil water, then you can brew excellent beer at home right now! All you need to get started are a few pieces of important equipment and some very basic ingredients that can very easily be found online or in a local home brew shop.

If you choose a very basic home brewery setup, you can get started for under $100. You can of course move up to better equipment, but even with a cheap and very basic setup you can make great beer at home, stuff that tastes a lot better than that mass-produced garbage you find in most grocery stores!

You get to be innovative when homebrewing. You can put almost anything into your home brew, making it as bitter, sweet, strong, light, dark, and fragrant as you'd like. But to make sure you brew something that's nice and delicious, I definitely suggest you start with a very basic homebrewed beer recipe that's already been done for you. But don't be shocked if after just a few batches of beer if you're already looking to branch out and produce your own recipes!

Beer is something that's existed for thousands and thousands of years, and it isn't going anywhere. Producing your own beer is a wonderful way to reconnect with our past and create things with our own hands the way our forefathers did... but of course we can brew much better tasting beer with ingredients from all over the world! Every town has local homebrewing groups where you can meet people just like you who love beer, and of course, many tastings are poured at the meetings!

So get going with homebrewing and discover this fun hobby. Believe me, your buddies will thank you for it!
