Cloning Cannabis - Part One

By Jared Perkins

The ability to clone a pot plant is a must have skill for a medical marijuana grower. Cutting clippings off a mother plant is much faster than growing from seed any day. Although it sounds like something out of a Van Damme movie, cloning is actually a fairly straight forward process. With very little practice you can be cloning in no time. There are a couple key tips to remember along the way.

Since you are researching cloning you probably know the importance of the sex of the plant. If you don't know, let me save you some research. other than for cross breeding purposes male plants serve no purpose in marijuana cultivation and actually cause problems. You should buy feminized seeds to start out and avoid male plants all together. Only make clones from plants that you are sure are 100% female.

Alright lets get started with preparation. Your material list includes cloning gel or powder, clear plastic disposable cups, spray bottle, soil, razor blade, and rubbing alcohol/prep pads. For under $20 you can get all this at Lowes. You are going to need to have a spot with a 18/6 light cycle waiting for your clones when you get done. Make sure that you have good access to the area so you can watch it closely. As with all other stages airflow will be important as to keep mold from ruining your grow all together.

The final steps of preparation are to prepare the clone dome. Start by cutting drainage holes in the bottom of one of your newly acquired clear plastic disposable cups. Use your razor blade to cut 3 holes in the bottom of the cup as to allow water drainage. You will need something for the water to run off into. I suggest cutting the top off another cup and putting it underneath your properly draining cup. You will also need to cut the top rim off your cup with the drainage holes so another clear cup can properly fit on top as the dome. Once you have the top dome fitting snug on top of the drainage cup you are almost there.

The clone dome is ready for soil now. I don't stress the type of soil I use for this step. My only point of contention is any nutrient heavy soil for this stage. I do however like to prepare my soil in a specific way. Start by over saturating a cup full of soil with distilled water. Wait until it is all wet and then drain the water out. Now your soil is ready to provide many days of aided humidity to your clone dome and assist with root growth. The last thing I like to do is prepare a hole for the clone in the soil, and also add a pinch of cloning gel/powder. Just a habit.
