The National Mexican Flag

By Rob Fillertsen

Mexico City is one of many places where big historical flags, including flags of Mexico, are attached to giant residential flag poles of all kinds. Most world countries have their own uniquely designed national flag or banner. There are only a handful of countries or states that have yet to fly their respective national flag.

Mexico has had their respective tricolor type flag for a few centuries, even though some of the flag elements have around longer. Following their declaration of independence, during the earlier years of the 19th century, they adopted a vertical tricolor displaying the colors red, white and green. The Mexicans are not the only ones to fly a vertical tricolor; countries like France and Italy are represented by a vertical tricolor as well.

Like other some flags of Europe, the colors on Mexican flags have specific representation or better said meaning. The order in which the colors are to be displayed was actually specified back in 1823. Flag size and the details of the coat of arms were specified till a century and a half later. This occurred on the occasion of the Olympic games, held in the Mexico City.

The country of Mexico is one of the largest economies in the world, and considered a substantial power in the region of Middle America. The territory or its land is bordered by the Pacific Ocean on the west and by the Gulf of Mexico on the east. The USA borders Mexico to the north. The country's population counts more than 100 million people.

Interestingly, the state coat of arms refers to the legendary foundation of "Tenochtitlan," which really is modern day Mexico City. According to this tradition, the Aztecs were to construct a city when they found a lake with an island in the middle or center as well as a cactus plant growing on it. An eagle with a serpent in its beak perched on the cactus plant as a sign to the Aztecs.

As mentioned above, giant Mexico flags are attached to 50 meter high flagpoles throughout the country. Back in '99, the then sitting president launched a program installing tall flagpoles and erecting big flags throughout the country. The flag size that was specified was about fourteen by twenty-five meters.
