Glass Light Shades And Interior Decor Of Small Spaces

By Constantine Vukovich

Homeowners trying to decorate the house occasionally run across very small rooms present a lot of problems. Small rooms, which can be bathrooms, hallways or even bedrooms, are difficult to decorate because they don't have much space to work with. In general, there are three strategies to address small rooms. The strategies involve adding mirrors to the area, installing small furniture, and putting in a bright light source. All three strategies increase the perceived space.

The truth is that the last two ideas, i.e. a mirror and undersized furniture, are only useful if there is a good light source to illuminate them. Otherwise if its dark, the effect of both items becomes diminished substantially. Therefore it's imperative that a good light source is chosen for the space. We suggest glass lamp shades are one of the best ways to decorate the small rooms. Popular ones include tall versions like torchiere lamp shades.

There are a number of reasons to stick with lamp shades made of glass. Lamp shades made of glass, much as any other lamp shade, soften the glare of a light bulb. Glass shades are also great for small spaces because they make use of all light, rather than absorbing some of it as would a traditional shade. Finally, glass lamp shades can be striking decor pieces by themselves.

There are a number of glass lamp shades possible. We review a few here.

A large number of shapes are found for lamp shades. Some of the desirable ones are the hurricane and the gas shades. The hurricane shade is typified by a vase-like profile that bulges in the waist and subsequently getting narrow into a pinched-off top. Because of its distinctive outlines it is a very fashionable light piece. One other fascinating glass shade is the traditional gas shade that was popularized in the age of Queen Victoria. The day and age observed the rise of gas lights and therefore a increase in number of consumers and producers.

The Tiffany style is one for which Louis Comfort Tiffany, a 20th century artist, was responsible. He was a son of the entrepreneur who started the store of the same name that dots cities all over the world currently. Tiffany was head of his own business. He used his position to innovate freely, aided by classical techniques in stained glass and transferring them into new media. His creations were famous for being multi-colored, bright and emotive. A hundred years later his original lamps are still in high demand, though most are in need of restorative work.

Upright torchieres are frequently employed for lighting up parts of the house with soft lighting. The term torchiere means with standing lamp. The lamp shade is most often a broad conical shape that flares toward the ceiling to cast the bulb across a wide area, meaning that the light softly filters evenly all over the room. Torchiere shades are available in many colors and diameters. Measure the radius on wide side to get the catalog size and also on the bottom where the fitter joins to the shade.
