Helping Out Others By Knitting For Charity

By Stella Blankhead

Helping out a charity is not only something that makes you feel good, but it helps others at the same time. There are many ways that you can do this today and all you need is a bit of time and skill. Knitting for charity has become a popular way to help those who can't help themselves. If you are interested in turning your hobby into something that helps others, here is a look at how you can do that.

You may be wondering just what kind of things these charities are looking for. Actually the answer is simple, whatever you are able contribute. Blankets are big things for charities. You can knit small blankets for preemies or large ones for adults. If you don't have time to knit a blanket, you may make squares and donate them. Some charities collect knitted squares and them sew them together to give to those that are in need.

Hats and beanies are also always needed. Those that are weak like premature babies and chemo patients are always in need of some form of head covering. The winter items will also help those in need get through the cold months. Things such as mittens, scarves, sweaters, and toys are also good things to donate.

Charities do various things with the items that are collected. Some work in other counties, sending blankets and hats to orphanages in poorer countries. But these things also help the elderly, the AIDS patients, and the chemo patients. The premature baby units are always welcoming items such as booties, blankets, little hats, and even toys for their little patients. Some charities will collect items to be sold to raise money for the cause.

It isn't hard to get involved and donate your knitted items. Look around your community first. Ask the hospital and hospices if they are in need of any knitted items for their patients. Churches usually have some programs set up to help others and you may find they will accept your knitted items. And, don't forget your own local charities as they are always in need of community kindness.

Searching the internet will show you a lot of different types of charities that are accepting knitted items for their causes. Some of these charities may send things abroad to those that need them. This may also bring different types of causes to your attention you were not aware of before. Because you'll have a large selection to choose from, this may help you decide what you want to knit for others.

It doesn't matter whether you are just a beginner and your skills are still non-existent. Practicing on squares and scarves are perfect ways for you to develop a skill as a knitter and to help someone out at the same time. So don't worry that your things are not perfect, someone will find that they are.

If you have ever wanted to join a cause and feel good about helping someone, using your hobby is the easiest way to do this. Knitting for charity is a popular way to donate time and love by creating something from your own hands that usually takes no time at all. And, each item donated is used and given to someone who is thankful for those who care.
