Your Personal Organic Garden Will Require Some Supplies

By Jane Clark

Because it is kind to the environment and fairly economical, many people are turning to organic gardening. Before you start your garden, you need to get a number of supplies from your neighborhood store. Above all of the materials you need is soil, this being the platform in which your plants will grow.

The shape of the land will have to be checked, before you prepare it or plant the seeds. Some compost needs to be applied first, to give you a range of nutrients and neutralize the soil, since you are not sure of the pH level. You can make your own compost by using dead leaves, weeds, manure, and vegetable and meat waste material. As a result you reduce trips to the landfill to dump the stuff, and you save the money you would have paid for the compost. Study what you would like to plant before buying any seeds, so that you can be sure they will survive your environment. Instead of planting seeds, it is possible to opt for young seedlings, but be mindful that the leaves are a healthy color as well as not being wilted.

Insect infestations are probably the worst type of threat you will face, but you do have some natural allies in other insects, ladybugs, birds and toads, in addition to which you could use horticultural oils. Weed growth, one other issue, can be dealt with by taking them out of the soil, for which activity you may wish to wear some gloves, and possibly knee-pads. You can also keep unwanted weeds under control by preventing them from germinating, which you do by spraying corn meal gluten granules or horticultural vinegar on the ground, which has the added benefit of releasing nitrogen into the soil. Most weeds show up in early spring or fall, and this is the time to utilize this spray. Weeds can even be killed through the use of one of the liquid fish or seawed-based fertilizers, which are not toxic. The fertilizer is going to also improve your soil to the benefit of your vegetation, with phosphate, nitrogen and potash.

You needn't forfeit participating in organic gardening through lack of a backyard, as you can also do it in pots. Your pots should ideally be manufactured from clay, wood or plastic. Because they are in pots rather than in a garden, they will need to be watered more often. Becoming geared up by having all of your gardening items makes it easy to plant your crops, harvest them, and be ready for rotating them. Browse around if perhaps there's more than one garden store you can go to, and check on their prices to get the best deal before you buy. The online world is a good place to look for items you can't find locally, and you can often discover good deals as well as advice.

Natural gardening is really the best way to grow your vegetables and other crops. It can help to save you a lot of money, and you can make sure that you are eating food that is chemical free. Don't you think it's time for you to try out the difference by cultivating your organic garden. You will most certainly recognize an improvement in your general well-being after you have eaten food free of chemicals for a while.
