The Sumptuous Wonder That Is Sushi

By Elinor Tran

Almost everywhere, you find that Japanese cuisine is sought after. Take it from foodies, who are aware that there is more to this unique cuisine than sushi Calgary. Every dining experience allows you to savor different flavors, tastes and textures. Other than that, your eyes get more than what they bargained for because of the lovely presentations.

Basically, traditional Japanese food is the assemblage of rice, known as gohan, and an array of side dishes, known as okazu. The gohan is served in a bowl. The okazu is placed on a small plate. Miso soup can also be served, and also appetizers.

Due to their great seafood supply, the Japanese rarely include meat in their meals. It also allows them to avoid using the meat of four legged animals, which is known to be Buddhist taboo. A typical diet is strongly based on seaweed, grains and wheat, and then seafood.

The most popular type of food is sushi. Even Westerners have learned to grow fond of this dish. It is basically vinegared rice, known as shari combined with different ingredients which are called neta. This dish is categorized into nigiri and maki.

Nigiri refers to your selection of protein served literally on rice with wasabi in between. The commonly used protein is sashimi, which is raw fish. However, you can choose other alternatives such as fish eggs or tofu.

Then there is maki, possibly the most popular type. It is the vinegared rice and toppings wrapped in sheets of seaweed. They become nori rolls and come in six to eight slices. Maki uses fish that is less raw, compared to Nagiri. It also allows for more creativity.

Many health benefits come with Sushi Calgary. Aside from enjoying a sumptuous meal, you also obtain vitamins and niacin coming from the seaweed. But there are times wherein the fish is fishier than it should be. Thus, common sense to smell it before downing it should help you savor your meal.
