Several Supplies You May Need To Start Your Organic Garden

By Marty Cook

Quite a few people have initiated organic gardens because it is beneficial to the environment as well as being relatively inexpensive. You'll need some supplies at your local store, prior to getting started with your garden. Among the items you should get, soil is probably the most important, since it is the growing medium for your plants.

The excellence and fertility of the garden's soil must be optimised before any planting is started. The dirt must be supplied with nutrients, and since you won't be sure of its PH level, neutralised, both of which can be achieved by adding compost to the soil. You can make your own compost through the use of dead leaves, weeds, manure, and vegetable and meat waste items. This will save you from taking the stuff to the landfill, plus you don't have to spend money for the compost. Research what you want to plant before choosing any seeds, so that you can be sure they will survive your environment. As opposed to planting seeds, you'll be able to opt for young seedlings, but be mindful that the leaves are a healthy color as well as not being wilted.

Insect pests can be probably the most severe threat you will face, but you do have some natural allies in other insects, ladybugs, birds and toads, in addition to which you could use horticultural oils. Weeds, another issue, can be dealt with by taking them out of the soil, for which activity you may wish to wear some gloves, and possibly knee-pads. You may also keep weeds at bay by preventing them from germinating, which you do by spraying corn meal gluten granules or horticultural vinegar on the ground, which has the added benefit of releasing nitrogen into the soil. Most weeds come out in early spring or fall, and this is the time to try this spray. For those who have a seaweed or fish-based fertilizer, which can be purchased in liquid form and is non-toxic, you can also use it to get rid of weeds. Nitrogen, phosphate, and potash, that can be good for the crops, are usually released.

You can do your organic gardening in planting pots if you don't have a backyard. Your planting pots should ideally be manufactured from clay, wood or plastic. You'll need to water your potted plants with greater frequency than if they were in a back garden. Make sure you get every one of your garden supplies beforehand, which will make it easy to plant and harvest your crops, and be prepared to rotate them. There is bound to be more than one gardening products store in your town, so look around and and don't buy until you have compared prices. The web is a good place to look for items you can't find locally, and you can often discover good deals as well as advice.

You owe it to yourself to grow your vegetables, and other crops you may like, by way of organic gardening. It will help you save a fair amount of money and you will eat food that is free of chemicals. The time is ripe for you to develop your very own organic garden and begin to enjoy the difference. You will most likely discover an improvement in your general well-being once you have eaten food free of chemicals for a while.
