DIY House Painting Work

By Amy Newingham

While it does take some effort, painting your rooms something most people can do. When the home has not been painted in awhile, you know that a painting project can be a challenge. When you come up with the time to do it, you can save a lot of money. If you believe that you don't have the time, then you should think about hiring someone.

After awhile, the paint on your wall will either begin to fade or peel. The one immediate solution is to obtain a paint scraper and scrape off the peeling paint. When your residence is really old, you may have several coats of paint, which will compound the problem. You will end up with a tougher time in the event the layers of paint below are oil-based. After you have the peeled paint stripped off, and scraped as best as you could, then you need to putty the holes in the wood, spackle the bare spots in the drywall, and next, sand it as good as you can. Once you have completed this, clean off the dust and let it dry up. It is advisable to wait approximately 24 hours to fully dry.

Among the much bigger complications with older homes is from moisture build-up. You might find paint fractures if your home contains excessive condensation or leaks. Such a thing happens quite often in a bathroom, and most likely, you will find mold or mildew at the same time. Though commonly found in the bathroom, its possible you have this problem in other parts of your house. Leakages could cause paint cracks as well as shrubs that are too close to the house. If you have cracking paint as a result of too much moisture, then you need to look for a different solution. In the event the paint cracking happens to be inside, you will want to make a solution of one part bleach and three parts water to stop the mildew buildup. If it is outside of the home, simply use the solution that comes with a pressure washer.

You will also need to repaint in the event the paint on your home is fading. This generally develops outside when you have direct sunshine almost daily. To avoid fading, don't use bright or bold colors like red. If you want colors that get noticed, try ones that tend to be golden or with a ruddy tone.

It is best to attempt to keep your home looking fresh and new. You must keep it painted every couple of years, and quickly fix any leaks to get rid of the moisture.
